“God gave us two ears but only one mouth.
This is because God knew listening was twice as hard as talking.”
You would say what’s there to learn in listening. I listen to music, I hear what people say, I listen to the crap my father raps on whenever I get late from a party drunk… well, yes, but do you know what effective listening is?
Let’s see what listening really is?
Effective Listening is an active process consisting of three basic steps:
1) Hearing: It means listening to catch what the speaker says.
2) Understanding: The next part of listening is you take what you have heard and understand it.
3) Judging: After you are sure you understand what the speaker has said you think about whether it makes sense.
Thus Listening is different from Hearing. You might hear a song or some joke, but to listen is to understand what you have heard properly.
The most common fallacy about listening is it is a talent that cannot be acquired. The only reason why some people are better listeners than others is because they are more focused. It is a skill like any other that through practice can be acquired.
